Torre de la Plata

The Monumental Seville around TOBY eats the world: Torre de la Plata.

Less than 200 meters from the Torre del Oro, you will find the most unknown Torre de la Plata.

The Torre de la Plata is an octagonal tower built in the 13th century by the Almohads, and is located on Santander Street, in front of our restaurant, hidden by the facade of the Spanish Forecast building. The date of its construction is estimated between 1252 and 1289 and formed the end of the walled city of the south, joining with a wall to the Torre del Oro that closed the Arenal space.

When conquering Fernando III the city in 1248 was red-baptize like Victory Tower, although popularly it always conserved the name of Tower of the Silver.

Later, when the walls lost their usefulness as an element of defense, their walls served as support for a multitude of houses, warehouses and other types of buildings. Specifically, from the beginning of the 16th century, the tower was surrounded by warehouses and houses, with the consequent visual loss of its size and architecture, appearing in the old Corral de Segovia without any use until the following century, when it was rented together to other adjacent buildings.

Until recent times it served as a dwelling, its silhouette being hidden between terraced buildings, between which only the battlements were visible and little else.

In 1868 it was totally isolated from the Torre del Oro, and from there its decline and abandonment was progressive. Surrounded by buildings that did not allow its view from the street, the Corral de las Herrerías grew up around it, conceived as an ideal space to develop a series of houses that would accommodate a contingent of low-income population whose labor activity was linked to the surrounding industries, mainly those of coal and iron.

As a refuge for the destitute, it lasted until 1992, when it was partially restored, knocking down the Torre del Oro garage, allowing at least to see the historic tower up close.

Currently, it has recovered part of its lost prestige and tour guides makes always a stop close to it to tell their groups the close relationship he had with his best known twin sister, the Torre del Oro.
